From Java, Indonesia, Senyawa builds a bridge between traditional Javanese music and contemporary experimental music. Vocalist Rully Shabara has a voice that ranges from singing to wailing to ritual growling beyond this earth. Instrumentalist Wukir Suryadi, who plays a homemade string instrument made of a bamboo trunk, metal and bamboo strings, creates the melodic, and sometimes fierce, almost volcanic-like sound that blends in seamlessly with Shabara’s vocal.
